* Spoilers Ahead *
My emotions were all over the place with this read.
My heart stopped at the end of chapter two where I was provided with a brief reprieve before she did. Shanley actually did it. She killed Jarren!
I shouldn’t be surprised. She did create a zombie-ridden world after all. Death should not be unexpected. But, Jarren? AND wth was Laney thinking brining him back? At least he took it like a champ. I was still a sentimental blubbery mess.
I really did enjoy these characters.
Laney is a kick-ass. She is deadly, fun, sarcastic, and vulnerable all at the same time. She was treading a fine line with her pissy attitude for a while, but I understood her for that very same reason. Her stance with me was solidified when she took responsibility for her actions and was direct with Sean. I could breath again, after that.
Sean did not make a great first impression and he was unable to recover in my eyes. Simply put, he pissed me off and I wanted Laney to punch him in the face. Many, MANY, times.
Derek Mitchell, this man is a force to be reckoned with, charismatic and gorgeous slash as needed protector. His hotheaded attitude was forgive as it was evident he respected Laney. It is easy to see where Laney’s long time crush came from.
Guist is quiet but solid. Initially I felt he was not as evolved as the rest, however as the book progressed I understood why his strengths were developed as they were. I came to love him and his “robotic” ways.
Trouble in paradise – I wanted to strangle both Laney and Derek at various points but I’m glad it worked out. The ending was a bit too copacetic and makes me fearful of what the future holds for them. Especially since Shanley is bold and kills off well liked characters.
